“How long, Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?” — Psalm 13:1 (Selah)
There are moments when the silence feels unbearable.
Prayers seem unanswered. The waiting stretches longer than expected. Questions circle endlessly in the mind, and the heart quietly whispers, How long, Lord?
David understood that kind of pain. In Psalm 13, he did not disguise his heartbreak behind polished spiritual language or pretend faith removed the weight of his suffering. He cried out from a place of exhaustion, grief, and deep uncertainty, allowing his anguish to become an honest prayer before God. And then comes one small word: Selah.
Pause
The word Selah is often understood as a sacred pause—a moment to stop, reflect, and sit in the weight of what has just been spoken. It appears not only after praise, but also after cries of grief and desperation. That is what makes it so powerful. Selah reminds us that God is present not only in victory, but also in the middle of the struggles we face.
Sometimes the soul needs permission to stop fighting every battle, stop carrying every burden, and simply rest long enough to breathe in the presence of God.
Psalm 62:8 says:
“Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.”
Notice the invitation: pour out your heart. God is not asking for perfect prayers. He is asking for honesty. The fear, the disappointment, the exhaustion, the unanswered questions—bring them before Him.
Selah teaches us that faith is not the absence of questions. It is the willingness to pause long enough to place those questions into God’s hands.
So today, instead of rushing past the pain …
Pause.
Breathe.
Reflect.
And remember that even in the silence, God is still your refuge.
Selah.
