“Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young…” Psalm 84:3 (NIV)
Every spring, I find myself watching the birds outside my home with a renewed sense of wonder. They return as if guided by an unseen map, searching for the perfect place to build their nests. This year, an Eastern Phoebe chose the beam above the couch on my front porch, while others disappeared into the thick hedges surrounding the yard. Twig by twig, blade of grass by blade of grass, she worked tirelessly from sunrise to sunset, carefully creating a safe place where new life could flourish.
One afternoon, curiosity got the better of me after the phoebes were grown and flown. I gently took down the abandoned nest to see how it had been built. I was surprised by what I found. Woven throughout the sturdy outer shell were bits of rope, small twigs, and an incredible amount of dried mud that held everything firmly together. It wasn’t a picture-perfect nest, but it was remarkably strong. Then I looked inside. The center was lined with soft, fresh-cut grass, creating a warm, gentle place for fragile little birds to rest and grow. The contrast couldn’t have been more beautiful. Strength on the outside, tenderness on the inside.
Similarities Between Us
As I stood there holding that tiny nest, I couldn’t help but think that families aren’t all that different.
While birds build nests from twigs and grass, parents and grandparents build homes with love, faith, patience, and countless ordinary acts of service. They create places where children feel safe, where laughter is welcomed, where tears are comforted, and where faith is quietly woven into the fabric of everyday life. Like the little sparrow in the psalm, they instinctively understand that a secure nest is about far more than shelter. It’s about creating an environment where life can grow strong. Just as each twig serves a purpose, every conversation, every family meal, every bedtime prayer, and every word of encouragement becomes another piece of a home where hearts can flourish.
Intentional Building
Birds don’t build their nests by accident. They carefully select each twig, leaf, feather, blade of grass, and even unexpected materials they happen to find, returning time after time until their work is complete. They simply use what is available and faithfully continue building. Family nests deserve the same thoughtful attention. Few of us build our homes under perfect circumstances. We face disappointments, financial pressures, health challenges, busy schedules, and seasons we never expected. Yet with God’s help, those very experiences can strengthen the framework of our families. Strong homes are built through intentional choices made day after day: choosing forgiveness over resentment, encouragement over criticism, time together over constant busyness, and faith over fear. The strongest family legacies are rarely formed through grand gestures. Instead, they grow from the quiet, consistent habits that communicate, “You are loved. You belong here. Together we will follow God.”
Like that little nest on my porch, healthy families are both strong and gentle. They stand firm against life’s storms while remaining soft places where weary hearts can find comfort. Our children need both. They need parents and grandparents who provide wise boundaries and steady guidance, while also offering compassion, encouragement, grace, and unconditional love. Every tradition we establish, every Scripture we share, every prayer we whisper, and every act of kindness we model strengthens the foundation beneath them. When we intentionally build our family nest on God’s truth, we prepare the next generation not only to leave home with confidence, but to build strong, faith-filled nests of their own; creating a legacy that reaches far beyond our own lifetime.
Faithful to the Tasks
As I finish my coffee each morning, I still find myself glancing toward the porch beam and the hedges, watching the families of birds come and go about the property. At this point, parents are nurturing the babies and teaching them to fly. They are faithful to the task of parenting, all day, every day.
The birds strong families aren’t built in a single day, but by being faithful to the task each day.
Perhaps that’s the lesson God has been quietly teaching me through the birds outside my window. Building a family legacy isn’t about achieving perfection or creating a picture-perfect home. It’s about intentionally building a place where faith is lived, love is abundant, grace is extended, and children learn what it means to follow Christ. One prayer, one conversation, one family tradition, one shared meal, and one act of love at a time, we build the kind of nest where hearts are nurtured, lives are shaped, and future generations are prepared to build strong, faith-filled homes of their own.
