The Killing Tide by Dani Pettrey

I was very excited to read The Killing Tide. I’ve read all of Dani Pettrey’s published work and a new series is a very exciting prospect. The first series, Alaskan Courage was set, funnily enough, in Alaska. Then came Chesapeake Valor, in and around Baltimore. Now, for Coastal Guardians we land at the beach in North Carolina.

Considering there’s a whole new location to set up, I felt like I knew the town of Wilmington, N.C. really quickly. But the thing with this book is the action. It begins very boldly and then the bodies start dropping. There’s a journalist on the run, one Coast Guard officer missing, another dead, and we are off.

Pettrey is a master of keeping the reader guessing, and considering I read a lot of romantic suspense, I didn’t see the bad guy coming at all. I was clueless until the final few chapters. Another of her strengths as a writer is the way she weaves secondary characters into each novel and as such I’m already anticipating the second offering in this series, The Crushing Depths.

But to the novel at hand. Along with the adrenaline inducing action, the great world building and the fantastic secondary characters, there’s also a sweet romance, but no spoilers. Oh and I forgot to mention, one of the greatest first lines ever. Seriously now. I highly recommend this fantastic new series.
