Have you ever been nervous to turn to the first page of a book? I’ll admit, I was a shade twitchy as I opened Storm Rising by Ronie Kendig. Her last offering, Thirst of Steel had sent the Tox Files out with more an explosion than a simple bang. I wasn’t really sure how an author, even one as brilliant as this one, could follow up.
Disclaimer – I have the joy of calling Ronie a close friend. I remember while having coffee together one day, she lit up as she whispered about a new idea. A story with an ancient, biblical book, lost through the ages. Thankfully I didn’t have a mouthful of coffee. She’d have either ended up wearing it, or watching it dribble out as my jaw dropped.
I had to wait a long time to see if the end product would hold a candle to the concept she’d shared. The answer is a resounding “yes.” Leif Metcalfe leaps from the pages of this book with a mixture of in-your-face bluntness and enticing mystery. Without giving away any spoilers, Leif is a man with a past and I’ve got some wild ideas about that, but am going to have to wait to see if I’m right. My friend won’t divulge!
What I can tell you is, this is a thrilling page turner. First, it takes you all over the world, then pulls your heart strings and raises your blood pressure. The writing is tight and the characterization, vivid. Yet Kendig manages to weave in a tender romance and heart wrenching family thread. If you like a fast paced, adrenaline burning read, this is for you.
