Flashover

Flashover, by Megan Besing

Flashover had a lot to follow after Flashpoint, and boy, did it. This is one story that starts with a bang and keeps on going. MY reader-self thanks the author for one wild ride. The mom of two who needs her sleep is slightly less thrilled.

Houston James has a lot to prove. Lies forced his from the pastoral job he loved so he signed on as a one of the Jude County Hotshots, despite his firefighter brother Macon’s concerns. Houston suffered bad burns in a house fire but has pushed the memories aside as he works to earn enough money to go to seminary. How could he have predicted that he’d run into the girl whose heart he broke in High School. Or that the next thing he’d do was rescue her?

Sophie’s brother Crispin disappeared on a job for Homeland Security, and whatever his role, as the story opens, his career is putting her life at risk. Forced to relocate, she thought she’d found peace rescuing horses on her ranch in Montana. The last person she expected to help her survive is the boy who stood her up and shut her out. Only this time, Houston James is all man and he’s out for forgiveness.

ACTION AND ROMANCE

Where to start. Ive never read Megan Bessing before but she’s clearly talented. I’d say this is a plot driven story, but the relationship element holds equal balance and that’s not easy. The book opens with action and that doesn’t stop until the very end. Anytime there was a few pages without impending disaster or the response to a disaster, I grew uneasy, knowing it was only a matter of lines before another crisis. But even within all the trouble, the repair of Houston and Sophie’s relationship, and his facing old fears is uppermost and deeply encouraging.

If you like a fast paced but clever and touching romance, this whole series is highly recommended. I received a copy of Flashover from the publisher. The views are all my own.
