Even After This is a story I prayed to see published and I am delighted to see it on my bookshelf.
This story blew me away when I read it several years ago. That impact hasn’t changed. Completely. I don’t impress easily, but from the beginning pages this story will grip you. Meredith witnessed and lived through a terrible tragedy. Four years on, she’s trying to move forward and goes to Colorado hunting for an investment property. She accidentally meets movie star Harlan and her quiet, controlled, recovery focused life is completely upended.
Clack has several strengths as a writer, raging creativity, emotional intellingence and thoughtful storytelling. But for me, her ability to pivot from gut-wrenching heartbreak to laugh out loud humor, is unparalleled. This is incredibly difficult to do well, but equally powerful when used carefully.
Meet Meredith and Harlan
Meredith is a complicated character with astonishing self-discipline, self-awareness and courage. When you wrap those qualities in the right set of circumstamces, you get magic. Meanwhile Harlan has no idea what, or rather who is about to change his life forever. He’s my favorite kind of hero – noble and strong, but considerate and able to use bigger picture thinking.
After I read this for the first time, I had the thought that this story could chnge the way we view grief and the way people move on from loss. That thought hasn’t changed. This story will make you tear up and giggle and hope. I have believed in Even After This for years – I hope you read it and see why. What an incredible story. I received a copy of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. The obvious love of the story, is all my own.
