Seed, by Debb Hackett

And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground,

Mark 4:26 (NIV).

In chapter four of Mark, Jesus was obviously feeling like some yardwork was in order (my interpretation). He delivered the Parable of the Sower, the Parable of the Growing Seed, and the Parable of the Mustard Seed in quick succession. In modern publishing terms, a trilogy. You see, Jesus knew his audience, most likely landowners, farmers, and laborers. He spoke to them in story, giving them material in such a way that they’d grab the concepts very quickly.

As we head into Easter celebrations, it’s the perfect time to check our own spiritual gardens. So, I’d like to share three questions. Be warned though, I can kill plants just by making eye contact (maybe pray I’m not the same level of lethal in the spiritual realm).

How good is your seed?

In the parable, Jesus discusses the bumper harvest that follows good seed thrown on fertile soil. Are you spending time working on your relationship with the Lord? Do you read scripture, study it, worship and spend time in prayer? Do you have a mechanism for accountability so that you can work on spiritual disciplines that might damage the light you’re shining?

How good is your aim?

Jesus highlights how throwing seed into wasteland where birds might pick it up, or stones hamper its ability to grow strong and hardy. Prayerfully consider where you need to be planting. Ask the Lord to give you a space to cultivate and focus your effort. Do you cultivate relationships outside your faith community? At different times in my life, I’ve found those friend groups easier to identify, and at others it’s taken real intentionality.

How good is your weeding?

There are all sorts of spiritual weeds. First of all, let me suggest focusing on your own yard before pointing out the crabgrass over the fence. Beyond that, keep vigilant over your own spiritual health. There’s nothing so appealing as someone on fire for the Lord. Someone real, who struggles and wrestles but who holds firm to the Rock of Salvation through it all. Remember we have an enemy who will look to pollute your garden at every possible opportunity. Planting good seed isn’t enough. The garden needs tending.

As we walk into Easter, remember that this was when Jesus opened the garden of Heaven for all, and asked us all to plant the fruit. Can I encourage you to prayerfully consider what seed your behavior is sowing, where you’re throwing that seed, and if you’re tending the soil? This is a great time to reflect on those around you and discern if you should anticipate a bumper crop or not. Because, if not, maybe it’s time to readjust your horticultural skills.

Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” Matthew 9:37-38.
