Hope Between the Pages by Pepper Basham

Hope Between the Pages is a fantastic, time slip story. I’ve long enjoyed Pepper Basham’s writing and this book is no exception.

Written from the viewpoint of two long separated relatives, we see the life of Sadie Blackwell, the housemaid who cares for the books at the incredible Biltmore estate in North Carolina, and Clara Blackwell, who runs the family bookstore, founded by her great grandmother, Sadie.

Clara’s life revolves around keeping the store afloat after a bigger chain moves into town. Meanwhile back in the early days of World War II, Sadie fights to maintain propiety and not fall in love with a handsome and charming British visitor to the estate.

The desperate hunt for some missing paperwork sets Clara on a path that reveals Sadie’s secret past and a love that reached across class and ocean divides. The beautiful and heartfelt relationship between Sadie and Oliver will hit even the mildest romantic right in the chest. And that’s before you get to Clara and Max. She’s on a journey of discovery, and he didn’t expect to find love waiting to be collected at the airport.

Hope Between the Pages is a generational triumph. I chuckled, sighed and teared up, Days after finishing it, the depth of several scenes is still with me. There’s no greater accomplishment as a writer than having the echoes of your story linger. This book is highly recommended.
