Rock

Rock, by DiAnn Mills

“He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken” (Psalm 62:2 ESV).

The Psalmist in this verse refers to God as a rock, our fortress. The ancient Hebrew used the word tsur for rock, meaning strength and endurance or everlasting power. I searched deeper to understand how the ancient Hebrews used this metaphor for God and came to a few conclusions.

God never changes.

The righteous and obedient life God wants for His people hasn’t changed since David penned the Psalm. God’s Word lasts forever. He is our rock.

God is not moved or shaken.

Our all-powerful, all-knowing God is never surprised by the good and evil actions of people. He knew before we were born that some of our choices would not honor Him. But He also created a way for us to return to Him in repentance and restore our relationship with Him. God doesn’t change His mind or break His promises. He is never stressed or overwhelmed. He is our rock.

God is our protector and shield.

We have nothing to fear from the enemy because God has our backs. He is our protector and refuge. God is always ahead of the enemy’s plans to hurt us and damage our faith. That battle has already been won. He is our Rock.

In Ephesians 6, we read about wearing the armor of God.

  • Belt of Truth
  • Breastplate of Righteousness
  • Shoes of Peace
  • Shield of Faith
  • Helmet of Salvation
  • Sword of the Spirit

God is our hiding place.

Our Rock is stable and secures us. He “tucks” us into a safe place and asks us to trust Him. What a better refuge when we are frightened, overwhelmed, and have lost our way. He is our Rock and our Fortress.

God is our strength.

He reshapes our life and binds us to Him, not by might or strength but by His Spirit. (Zechariah 4:6).

Paul says when he is weak, God is strong through him. (2 Corinthians 12:10). He is our Rock.

God is love.

The Bible is filled with countless reminders that God is love, but have we considered His love as a rock? If God never changes, cannot be moved or shaken, our protector and shield, our hiding place, and our strength, He is love. Only unconditional love can accomplish what our God does for and through us.

He is our Rock.
