Therefore, you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Matthew 24:44 ESV

In reading the above verse, I cling to an emphasis on the word expect. I sense my spirit shouting Amen! Not only is Jesus coming again, but we are instructed to be ready for a joyous, sudden, amazing, surprising, incredible, unpredictable, and promise-filled return. We are to prepare our hearts for the biggest party since Jesus’ first arrival as an innocent babe, a sacrificial lamb. The second arrival is our warrior God, the Lion of Judah, ready to claim His own people.

Wow! That is a thrilling anticipation wrapped in a promise. Jesus is coming for His people, and we need to have our lamps trimmed with the oil of preparedness. (Matthew 25:1-13). We are enthusiastically expecting Him. We can’t wait to see our Savior face to face. Our hearts are illuminated by the Holy Spirit, and we are dressed in wedding garments to greet the groom. We are ready to shake off the dirt of sin from this world and take on spotless garments to welcome the holy reign of Jesus. (Hebrews 9:28).

Proper Preparation

When I’m preparing my home for a party, I scrub clean all the seen and unseen places. I select my best outfit and search for accessories that showcase who I am. There’s no need for anyone to ask if I’m excited; it’s evident in my smile. My attitude toward life and serving others in my home makes my heart sing. The efforts I take to ensure my guests have a wonderful time is because these people are important to me. I choose to honor them. I can do no less for Jesus.

No one knows when to expect Jesus because only God has set the date. And He’s not sharing. (Matthew 24:36). It’s a grand surprise. Friends, don’t listen to those who claim they have insight into God’s plan for Jesus. They are deceivers who believe in control, manipulation, lies, and power—all are earthly selfishness. (Matthew 24:26-27, Luke 21:25-28).

Removing Fear

Some are fearful about this wonderous event, even denying it will happen. Many are afraid they aren’t good enough and haven’t checked all the boxes. Some put off coming to God in humble repentance because they value autonomy instead of a life devoted to the true God. It’s said that those who fail to expect Jesus haven’t heard about him, are half-heartedly serving Him, or choose to be their own God. 

Some fear for loved ones and friends who have chosen the world over God. We can only share our faith and let God do the rest. 

Dear ones, we’re saved by grace, not works. He’s done it all! (Ephesians 2:8-9). That is why we are expectant of Jesus’ return. (Revelation 1:7). 

Expect great things from God. 
His promises are true.
Go forth in glorious anticipation 
For all He’s done for you. 

God, we are excited for your return. Help us to be ready, to be faithful and true. Help us to share our love for You and Your tender mercies so the whole world can look forward to Your second coming. Oh Father, we are watchful and expecting Your glorious arrival. In Jesus’ precious and holy name. Amen.
